VPN: First question: Writing a spinoff to a Jossverse series is one thing, but actually continuing from where he left off is a another thing. Do you find it difficult to stay on Joss' path of writing when you write this series?
Malone: It has been difficult to try and keep that same sort of tone to the series, but with the way things ended in "Not Fade Away" you can sort of see the desire to continue with it. I think the show had a lot more to offer after its cancellation, and hope to add my own creativity to the continuation, whilst keeping Joss's original plot thread .... a vampire with a soul, on a fight for redemption.
VPN: From what I've heard, you plan on bringing back Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia? How are you going to do that?
Malone: Let's just say Angel is given the ultimate reward. Something that means the world to him. Cordelia.
VPN: So, what's the overall plot this season?
Malone: This season, Angel will face his greatest enemy. The very people who he's been playing cat and mouse with for five whole years. The Wolf, the Ram, and the Hart. Orchestrated by the Senior Partners, who have finally stepped up to end this once and for all. This will be a good wrap-up season for the Angel saga.
VPN: Wrap-up? Are you saying that you won't be making a season 7?
Malone: This season will close up pretty much all loose ends. From Angel's past with the fang gang (Darla, Spike, Drucilla), and to his longing hope of becoming human. That said, I don't see a seventh season of Angel, but there will be a movie-length feature film, wrapping up the whole thing. And....it looks as though Illyria will be getting a film of her own....
VPN: Well good luck with that! I see you have quite a few projects, other than Angel! Why don't we talk about Batman... have you finished shooting yet?
Malone: Shooting is almost over .... thanks god. The script had to undergo a few more edits, and drafts, then more edits, and you can tell that I'm exhausted! But, I'm very proud of what has been accomplished with the film, and with only a few more scenes left to shoot, hopefully we'll see an earlier release date. I am so excited about the movie, that I've already jotted down some notes for a sequel, in which Christian Bale, Jessica Alba, and Michael Caine have already signed up to do.
VPN: Great! I personally can't wait to see Poison Ivy! So, did you have to go through thousands of actors in order to get the one that could pull of the Joker even close to Heath Ledger's performance?
Malone: Ooh. Finding an actor who could even just attempt to reach the performance of Heath Ledger's Joker was exctrutiating. And, Johnny Depp's schedule was really hard to keep with, so on set, everytime we shot a Joker scene we had massive "Welcome Back" party .... but after the fifth time, Johnny didn't find it that funny, haha. But yeah, we went through a long line of cast, and in fact, when I first approached Depp I asked him if he'd consider playing "The Riddler". Who, isn't in the first movie, but because of his busy schedule, I wanted to plan ahead. But he just fit the character so well, so luckily he signed on for the part. And, Heath Ledger's Joker is a big influence on this film.
VPN: I only can imagine how difficult it was. So, you're in the process of writing a drama series, "Story of a Girl". How's that coming along?
Malone: In a way, it's going GREAT!! But in another way, it's not going very good at all. I have I think 5 actors signed on for the show, and am going through several re-writes of the first episode.
The only bad thing that I've got going for me at the moment, is to try and mix genre's together. This isn't your average ordinary teen drama ... but its nothing like the supernatural based shows I've been known to write. It's core is "TEEN DRAMA" but its filled with comedy, suspense, horror, romance, thriller, and the list goes on. So trying to incorporate several genre's into one, to keep the originality of it is quite hard.
VPN: So, do you think it has a strong possibility of being picked up?
Malone: I think it has a fighting chance. It's the first non-supernatural drama on the VPN, and a lot of teenagers will relate to the characters. It's sort of a Veronica Mars meets 90210 kind of show, but with the mixed genres inside. So, yes, I think it has a very strong possibility of getting picked up for 2010.
VPN: Well, best wishes to your current projects and all your upcoming ones! It's been a pleasure speaking with you! Thank you for your time!
Malone: My pleasure.
